Afraid of showing your art? Start small.

Updated: Apr 9

You want to start showing your art, but there are some barriers.

Whether you struggle with executive dysfunction or social anxiety, booking an art show is DIFFICULT for some of us out here.

I realized that I had to start SMALL if I was going to get started at all.

For me, that meant painting digitally. I had access to an old iPad, so I chose the app Procreate.

If you don't have access to an iPad, see if your phone is compatible with Procreate Pocket or Artrage.

If you don't have a smartphone- try a very small notepad with a pencil attached next to your bed.

Start small.

Just show one friend a doodle you made.

Start small.

Just post one drawing on instagram or Facebook.

Start small.

Hang your art up around your home so family and friends can see.

This is the first piece I ever proudly displayed in my own home.

This counts as showing your art. People have seen it!

Next step for me was a pop-up show. Planning ahead seemed daunting and scary, so I avoided it.

One morning, a friend mentioned a pop-up show happening that night! I know it may have given some folx anxiety, but it was just enough excitement to motivate me. If you want the whole story go read more about that first art show.

Having a show the same day eliminated the barrier of long-term-planning. I had a friend who I trusted and a boyfriend to support me which helped me with my social barriers.

I showed my art. My friends came to see it, and I felt AMAZING.

You can have this moment too.

Find out what your barriers are and build a completely new road that doesn't have them. Get a bulldozer and plow through that barrier.

Easy- no. Absolutely not.

Creative- yes. And we love creative.

So start small with what you have now.

Show someone who is interested in seeing your art.

Find some other art friends online or in the community to support you.

Please reach out for help ❤️

I loved reading your post about showing art and starting small! Your personal examples were so helpful and relatable, and it's great to see how much progress you've made by taking small steps. Your emphasis on starting small is spot on - sometimes it can feel overwhelming to try and tackle everything at once, so it's important to break things down into manageable pieces. And thanks for sharing those resources - I'm definitely going to check them out! Keep up the awesome work, my friend - I can't wait to see what you do next! ☺️ 🎨 💖
